A care home kitchen cooks for residents every day of the year, usually three meals plus snacks, and the people it feeds may need help to leave the building in an emergency. That makes the extract system a fire risk worth managing carefully. We arrange TR19 extract cleaning quotes for care homes across Edinburgh, the Lothians, Fife and Forth Valley. An independent specialist provider does the work and issues the certificate.

Care homes in Scotland come under the Care Inspectorate, which regulates and inspects care services across the country. There are around 14,000 registered care services in Scotland, its inspectors visit every one, and higher-risk services are inspected more often. Services are graded on care and support, environment, staffing, and management and leadership, and a clear record of extract cleaning sits alongside the rest of your premises paperwork.

Which TR19 frequency band care homes fall into

TR19 Grease sets minimum intervals by daily cooking hours: every three months for 12 to 16 hours, every six months for 6 to 12 hours and every twelve months for 2 to 6 hours. A care home kitchen cooking breakfast, lunch and tea is usually moderate use, which means at least a six-monthly clean. Larger homes cooking from early morning into the evening can move into the quarterly band. The provider's grease readings confirm the right interval, and the TR19 compliance guide explains the bands.

Fire safety duties and insurance

Under the Fire (Scotland) Act 2005 and the Fire Safety (Scotland) Regulations 2006 the duty holder must assess fire risk, taking account of people who may need help to escape, and the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) enforces those duties. Scottish Government fire safety guidance for care homes lists allowing kitchen extraction equipment to build up excessive grease deposits among the common causes of fire in equipment, and says a competent person should regularly maintain, and where necessary clean, cooking equipment and plant. SFRS says the significant findings of the fire risk assessment must be recorded where there are five or more employees or the premises are subject to a licence or registration, and kept available for inspection. Insurers may refuse a claim if a fire is traced back to poor maintenance.

What a full clean covers

The provider cleans the canopy and filters, the full ductwork run to the discharge and the extract fan, with access panels fitted where needed. Grease-depth readings are taken before and after, and the certificate comes with before-and-after photographs from matching positions. BESA says the post-clean report should also note any access limitations and name the technician. Keep it with your fire risk assessment so it is to hand whenever anyone reviews premises safety.

Planning the clean around mealtimes

The clean can be booked between meal services or overnight, so residents' meals are not disrupted. Tell us your mealtimes, how the roof or fan is reached and any areas where visitors need an escort, and the provider will plan around your routine and keep escape routes clear. If the home is in a converted house or an older building and nobody knows the duct route, an inspection report will map it.

Care groups with several homes

If your group runs homes across several council areas, the regulator and the fire service stay the same. The Care Inspectorate covers the whole of Scotland, and every home on this patch sits in the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service's East Service Delivery Area. We can arrange one quote covering every home, with a certificate per home, which keeps your records consistent across the group. Where a home shares a building, the Regulations require everyone with duties there to co-operate and co-ordinate. The cost guide shows what affects the price.

Frequently Asked Questions

How often should a care home kitchen extract be cleaned?

A care home kitchen cooking breakfast, lunch and tea is usually in TR19's moderate band of 6 to 12 hours a day, which means at least a six-monthly clean. Homes cooking from early morning into the evening can move into the heavy band, which means every three months. Grease readings confirm the right interval.

Who regulates care homes in Scotland?

The Care Inspectorate regulates and inspects care services in Scotland, grading them on care and support, environment, staffing, and management and leadership. Fire safety falls under the Fire (Scotland) Act 2005 and the Fire Safety (Scotland) Regulations 2006, enforced by the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service.

Will residents' meals be affected?

They should not be. The clean can be booked between meal services or overnight and planned around your routine. Tell us how the roof or fan is reached and where visitors need an escort, so the provider can plan access without disturbing residents or blocking escape routes.

What records will we receive?

The provider issues a certificate with before-and-after photographs and grease-depth readings, and BESA says the report should note any access limitations. File it with your fire risk assessment. SFRS says recorded fire risk assessment information should be kept available for inspection by the enforcing authority.

Do you employ the people who clean?

No. We arrange TR19 extract cleaning quotes and pass your enquiry to an independent specialist provider. A specialist provider does the work and issues the certificate. The duty holder remains responsible for fire safety even when outside help is used, as SFRS points out, so keep the certificate with your records.
